Conceived and directed by an Early Childhood college instructor out of concern for her own child and all young children, Sprout House embodies the soundest research and theories in education. Although it is unique, the school is primarily based on the modern British Infant School.
At Sprout House, children are allowed to be children, to grow and learn at their own pace, and to develop inner controls with sincere and gentle guidance.
Spontaneous play is valued and encouraged for the sheer pleasure, rich learning experiences, and social skills it fosters.
A strong but unpressured emphasis is placed on science. Most experts now agree that the abstracts (shapes, colors, letter, and numbers) have limited value without a broad base of life experience. Sprout House provides many opportunities to study living and non-living things in a gentle and respectful atmosphere. Some examples:
- Forms in nature: Seed pods, mushrooms, paw prints, crystals, sprouts, snowflakes, sea shells. When the joy of comprehending these forms is realized, more abstract forms can be discriminated.
- Meaningful sequences: Seed . . . sprout . . . grain . . . flour . . . bread
A strong commitment is made to providing excellence in children’s literature. Inspiring literary experiences in early childhood expand a child’s knowledge base, enrich vocabulary and grammar, provide a natural progression to reading, and provide exposure to fine art.
True creativity in thought and materials is fostered in the Sprout House setting. This age group possesses a unique imaginative genius, which must have opportunities to flourish.
Genuine human interaction is a cornerstone for emotional well-being, social skills, and a desire to learn. At our school, the relationships between teacher and child — and child and child — both support and transcend learning activities.
These statements only begin to touch on the varied and genuinely child-centered activities at Sprout House but are representative of our beliefs. The children continually investigate linked or integrated areas. This allows mental abilities to be mastered and clarified from the experience.
Sprout House is an equal opportunity school.
